We continue our Social Library series with examples of community engagement from libraries we follow on Facebook. This edition highlights how libraries connect with readers, writers, and museum goers, and how they tap into community interest around bees and mental health. If you'd like to see your library featured in an upcoming edition, please let us know via [email protected] or find us on Facebook.
- Boise Public Library in Idaho has invited the community to a Silent Book Club. "There's no assigned reading. Silent Book Club is about taking time out of your busy schedule to simply relax and read. You've earned it. Put down your phone, pick up a book, and spend quality time with fellow book lovers. This is a habit you'll want to repeat."
- Chicopee Public Library in Massachusetts shared a post celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their Museum Pass program. "In the last 10 years we have circulated more than 12,000 museum passes!" The library offers passes good for free or reduced admission to many local museums and attractions. Check out all the details on their Museum Passes page.
- Redwood City Public Library in California made the news with their Honey Bees, who live on the roof of the library, and the Bee Wall Interpretive Center, located in the Downtown Library’s Family Place. A Bee Jubilee marked the grand opening of the Bee Wall and featured bee-themed singers (check out the video!) and a chance for families to explore the interactive display, discovery drawers, and bee-themed library books. Kendal Sager, of Sager Family Farm, helped create the Bee Wall and manages the library’s bee colonies, which generates enough honey for the Friends of the Redwood City Public Library to sell in their bookstore.
- Ketchikan Public Library in Alaska has a robust writing program that includes a weekly Drop-In Write opportunity. It starts with dedicated time for self-guided writing, and then continues with a group meeting which includes group discussion, activities and feedback. This week's meeting will feature a livestream video presentation and Q&A session with a professional editor!
- Ouray Public Library in Colorado is hosting an evening of Community Conversation on the topic of mental health in partnership with the Tri-County Health Network. The event will be a moderated panel of community members who are willing to share their personal stories and audience members will also be given an opportunity to ask questions.
